What are hoof boots?

Hoof boots are removable protective boots designed to fit over a horse’s hooves. Think of them as temporary, flexible alternatives to horseshoes. They’re commonly used by barefoot horses or in situations where a horse needs extra hoof protection without permanent shoeing.

How Hoof Boots Are Used

1. Protection During Riding

Hoof boots are most often put on for rides, especially on:

  • Rocky or hard terrain

  • Gravel roads

  • Long-distance trail rides

They protect the hoof from excessive wear, bruising, and soreness, then are removed afterward.

2. Support for Barefoot Horses

For horses kept barefoot, hoof boots:

  • Allow natural hoof expansion and movement

  • Prevent discomfort while the hoof toughens over time

  • Help transition horses from shod to barefoot

They’re ideal when the horse is sound on soft ground but needs protection on tougher surfaces.

3. Therapeutic and Medical Use

Some hoof boots can be used during turnout/when stabled to support the following:

  • Laminitis or founder support

  • Hoof abscess protection

  • Post-trim tenderness

  • Injury recovery

Most boots can hold pads to cushion the hoof and promote healing.
