What to expect from a consultation

A typical consultation usually takes 90 minutes for the first visit and 45–60 minutes for follow-up appointments.

Before the first visit, I will ask you to complete an online form with details about your horse and its history. This helps me gain a clear understanding of your horse’s individual needs and how I can best support them from a podiatry perspective.

Below are some things you can expect during a consultation.

Initial discussion & history

We will discuss:

  • Your horse’s age, breed, workload, and environment

  • Any lameness history, current concerns, or performance issues

  • Diet, turnout, footing, and management routines

  • Previous shoeing or trimming history

  • Intended use of horse

Static assessment (standing)

I will assess the following:

  • Posture, conformation and body condition score

  • Hoof shape and balance

  • Heel height, toe length, flare, cracks, etc

  • Frog health, sole condition, and hoof wall quality

  • Take photos of your horse and their hooves to document any changes over time

Dynamic assessment (gait analysis)

Where a suitable surface is available I will ask for a dynamic assessment of your horse:

  • Walk and trot in hand, often on a firm, level surface

  • Possibly on a circle or different surfaces if needed

  • Look at how the hooves and limbs are landing

Trimming or hoof care plan

  • Perform a barefoot trim

  • Recommend hoof boots, pads, or other supportive measures if needed

  • Advise any topical treatments

  • In some cases, advise collaboration with a vet or farrier if necessary

Education & discussion

  • Explanations of what they’re seeing and why

  • Guidance on aftercare, turnout, exercise, or boot use

  • Advice on nutrition or environment if relevant to hoof health

  • A plan for follow-up visits and progression
